Exploring the necessity of natural oral & dental care. A terrain approach. Looking at natural boar & horse bristle tooth brushes. Fluoride, SLS & nano hydroxyapatite free toothpaste solutions & Bliss Energetics products.

Do you give your oral care the same low tox treatment you do to the rest of your health routine? If it needs a revisit, the Holistic Oral Care range at The Shop just got bigger.

Whats in Your Tooth Brush?

I now have ethically sourced boar and horse bristle toothbrushes.

Micro plastics are found in most toothbrushes, Yes! even the bamboo charcoal toothbrushes you find at the local health food store. Microplastics in oral care products have been shown to contribute to health problems such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, neurological issues and obesity. Not only that but there is evidence that microplastics interfere with the remineralisation of bone i.e teeth and they can also contribute to gum disease. 1–3

The Issues With Most Toothpastes on The Market...

Surprisingly even a lot of "natural" toothpastes contain nano hydroxyapatite & sodium laurel sulfate making them not so natural after all. I stock a range of toothpastes that are all sodium laurel sulfate, fluoride, and nano hydroxyapatite free. Sodium laurel sulfate is damaging to the skin, mucosa & microbiome, fluoride is a known neurotoxin & synthetic hydroxyapatite can have a demineralising effect on the teeth in some individuals. To me, these are important to avoide. 45

Regenerative Products

For those who like to avoid unnecessary dental work like I do, there are some amazing products from Bliss Energetics made from a family run business in the USA who uses all natural products, including pearl powder & shell based non-nano-hydroxyapatite (both excellent for remineralising teeth) + Ayurvedic herbs to make their products. Tooth puddy for remineralising small cavities and enamel damage, gum massage oil for gum disease and receding gums and whitening tooth scrub for whitening and removing plaque. 6

Other Home Oral Care Practices

Oil pulling with Castor Oil & Pearl Powder

There are also a couple of other things I like to keep in my medicine cabinet for oral care, pearl powder + castor oil for oil pulling with an extra mineral boost for the teeth & gums. Oil pulling is an old Ayurvedic process of swishing oil through your gums & teeth as a oral health & hygiene practice. After brushing, I get half a tablespoon of castor oil with half a teaspoon of pearl powder oil pull for 2mins or so. I’ve had customers and clients do this and their dentist have been shocked at the improvement on their gums and teeth.

Topical Pain & Inflammation Relief

Frankincense is also a great first aid item for alleviating teeth and gum pain and inflammation. Just put a few dabs of it on the affected area as needed.

You can find all of these in the oral care section of my website here.
