Wholefood Supplement & Herb Cheat Sheet

Wholefood supplements vs synthetic supplements
I’m not sure about the rest of the world, but here in Australia, both supplements (synthetic) & pharmaceuticals do not have to list all the ingredients on the label. The requirement is for the active ingredient to be listed, additives, & excipients can be hidden & the only way to find the full list is by going to the TGA website to look up the products public summary where you’ll often find a list of hidden ingredients that is longer than what is disclosed on the back of the bottle. This applies to both over the counter & practitioner only supplements and all pharmaceuticals. To me, this is as a massive problem, I see so many clients that are having symptoms as a result of hidden ingredients in their supplements & pharmaceuticals that they are completely unaware that they’re consuming. Further to this issue of unwanted ingredients, isolated synthetic vitamins and minerals go through their own complicated chemical laden manufacturing process, a far cry from anything natural. This is something that’s left out of the education for naturopath’s and nutritionists. It was certainly left out of my education and was something I had to learn on my own as a professional.
This issue does not apply to wholefood supplements where the full ingredients list is required to be listed on the label, which is why I have been dedicated to building a comprehensive dispensary of wholefood supplements & herbal formulas to cater for a wide range of needs. To make things a little easier I created a cheat sheet & I’ve also included some natural swaps for pharmaceuticals for those who are like me & avoid the doctor unless its an extreme emergency. You can find the wholefood supplement & herb cheat sheet below.
Excipients in Synthetic Supplements
To give you an idea of how big this issue is, here are some of the exhaustive list of hidden excipients that I have found in TGA listed supplements, many of these excipients are found in pharmaceuticals also.
Vegetable oil can cause chronic inflammation & increase oxidation to cells & tissue. Can increase risk of hormonal issues, heart disease, obesity, and diabetes.
Disodium edetate chelates and can deplete calcium, zinc, and magnesium. Can be damaging to the kidneys and the neurological & cardiovascular systems.
Povidone (polyvinylpyrrolidone or PVP) can cause allergy & anaphylaxis in some individuals, PVP can collect in the gastrointestinal tract, liver, spleen, lungs, and lymph nodes.
Macrogol otherwise known as polyethylene glycol (PEGs) can cause neurological & mood issues, allergy & anaphylaxis, gastrointestinal symptoms & cardiovascular issues. PEG’s are possibly linked to myocarditis.
Magnesium stearate – can interfere with nutrient absorption & can cause gastrointestinal issues
Microcrystalline cellulose – can cause digestive issues & allergic reactions
Maltodextrin can cause blood sugar spikes & metabolic disturbances, microbiome imbalances, digestive issues, and allergic reactions
Calcium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate can effect the gastrointestinal system, the kidneys, the cardiovascular system & cause mineral imbalances.
